The racks of outboard gear in the Platinum Studio

Spectral Harmony
A massive, state-of-the-art studio complex in Mumbai

Platinum Studio with the Neve in the foregroundSet up in 1995 with a beta, 2 high bands and 4 cameras, Spectral Harmony has come a long way. Today Spectral Harmony is a massive, state-of-the-art studio complex in Mumbai designed by Nick Whittaker and Roger D'Arcy of the British acoustic consultancy Recording Architecture. Owned by Indman Media Services Pvt. Ltd, Spectral Harmony shifted from its original premises in Santa Cruz to Mumbai's Andheri West.

This facility was inaugurated in October 2000. The centerpiece of this studio is a 24-channel AMS Neve Libra, the first on the subcontinent. Apart from AMS Neve and the three Pro Tools, Spectral is also home to two Avid Media Composers, one of which has a film option.

Silver Studio with a Pro Tools setupJingles, music albums and film music are recorded and mixed here. Some of which are Shubha Mudgal's 'Ab Ke Sawan', Subash Ghai's 'Yaadein', Prakash Jha's 'Rahul', Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'Lajja', 'Bus Itna sa Khwab Hai', 'Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gam', and music albums of Daler Mehndi, Silk Route and Euphoria. Apart from advertisements, several music videos of Times Music, TIPS, BMG Crescendo and Magnasound are also made here.

The 50 square metre main control room features a 5.1 surround system comprising ATC 300A active speakers with two sub bass units and six ATC SCM20 surrounds. The cabinets were custom-designed by Whittaker and built on-site. The equipment in the main studio also includes a Lexicon 960L digital effects processor, an Eventide Orville processor and a Pro Tools 24 I/O running on an Apple Mac G4. Spectral Harmony's Otari MTR90 with Dolby SR has been transferred from its original premises.

The innovatively designed Recording HallThe 'Platinum' studio is targeted at India's huge film market. It boasts a 50 square metre control room with a 60 square metre recording area, large enough for around 30 musicians.

If that studio is too expensive to begin projects in, there are two sequencing rooms available for musicians to carry out pre production, a new concept in India. Spectral Harmony's smaller studio, the Silver room, contains the studio's existing Soundtracs Solitaire console, a Pro Tools set-up and Dynaudio monitoring. Two postproduction suites offer Pro Tools AV set-ups running on an Apple Mac G4s. There is also a transfer room, which is described as the "nerve centre" of the facility, networking the studios: another new concept in India.

Spectral Harmony was designed to international standard to attract overseas clients apart from quality-conscious Indian clients. To this end it has been very successful. Raju Sud, of Spectral summarises the big idea behind this Studio as, "Come in with an idea and walk out with a finished product".
