Gallery's powerful audio processor, Gearbox.Version 1.3 adds the new VariGroove technology for dynamic varispeed - essential for DJs and remixers.
A very high speed, high quality samplerate convertor with varispeed capabilities.
Aimed at video and film post production and offers a range of preset varispeed ratios for fixing and creating pull-up / pull-down problems.
Can also be used to varispeed to a wide variety of ratios and sample rate convert to any rate.
High quality samplerate conversion to arbitrary rates is supported.
GearBox is a drag and drop application and supports Digidesign Sound Designer II files.
GearBox for Video and Film Post-production
During video and film audio post production, it is common for sound and picture playback rate to vary as the editing progresses from stage to stage using different equipment. Often the audio is sped up or slowed down as it plays using synchronization hardware, but other times this is not possible and the audio must be manually altered. In other scenarios, audio often arrives incorrectly processed and a correction must take place to fix the problem. Gearbox takes the headache out of these scenarios and offers simple presets for the most common problems, along with user definable settings for unusual situations.
Included are the common corrections associated with 24<->25 Frame telecine conversions, 30<->2997 drop frame video pull downs and other variations.
For general post production and mastering, the incredible GearBox sample rate conversion can swap between 48kHz and 44.1kHz at speeds of 1.25 MB per second. An hour of audio can be processed in about five minutes.
GearBox for Mastering
Gearbox is also very useful for CD Mastering. For example, a split stereo pair from a 48kHz Pro Tools session bounce can be sample rate converted to 44.1kHz and stereo interleaved in one VERY quick operation. No other Sample rate converter even comes close to this level of performance.
GearBox for Radio Production
Gearbox is great for radio production too since as well as the essential conversion to 48kHz, it offers VARISPEED. You may wonder what this has to do with radio, so here's the explanation: Imagine you are a radio producer and you complete a 60 minute program ready to air. Amazingly, you are actually scheduled 60minutes and 30 seconds of air time. What do you do?
Most people would probably reach for a Time Compressor/Expander and try to fit the program using that. Problem is that time compression is not too kind to your audio since it involves thousands of tiny edits and artifacts are often introduced. It is also a VERY slow process, often working MUCH slower than real time.
So what can Gearbox offer ?
Well, think about it. We are talking 30 seconds over 60 minutes..... How about just slowing the whole program down a bit? Sure there will be a slight pitch change, but will you even notice it? In this scenario, the varispeed ratio is 1.0083 : 1. That is a change of 0.8 percent, which is probably undetectable to most people. It won't always help, but in many cases, varispeed is an option that has never been available on Digital systems of this type.
The Gearbox varispeed will gently transform your one-hour show in less than SEVEN minutes, and the quality will be unchanged by nasty artifacts. Varispeed is essentially a sample rate conversion. There are no tricks involved.
GearBox for Sound Designers
Gearbox is a fantastic creative tool. Many Sound designers rely on Samplers when working with effects to allow them to pitch them up or down. With Gearbox you can varispeed the sound FX quickly and simply with no quality loss, then spot them right into Pro Tools alongside the other sound effects. You can type in any varispeed ratio and hear the result FAST.
GearBox VariGroove for DJs and Remixers
Gallery have recently developed a powerful addition to Gearbox which is poised to transform the way DJs and remixers work with Pro Tools. The new technology called VariGroove is based on dynamic varispeed, and allows Gearbox to create 'link' files which start at one speed and end at another. This is precisely what is required when joining two records of different tempo, and has traditionally been done by hand with the speed control on a turntable. Gearbox with Varigroove was used recently by Remixer Andy Gray when he created the BBC Radio One 2 hour long dance mix. During the job, Andy had to seamlessly link tracks with different tempos, and Varigroove proved to be an essential tool. The links created with VariGroove were perfect, and are undetectable in the mix, as they gradually slow down the tempo across an edit.
